Well, things aren't going too well here at home, and it looks like I might be moving in with my brother very soon. Pending that change, I won't be able to do any site updates from when that happens to the time broadband is installed there.
Hopefully the change in location will be a good thing, since I will be in closer proximity to my current clients. This will promote working more closely with them to keep their websites fresh and up to date.
Moreover, I bought some more technology to adorne myself and possibly help shut out the bad things… guess it beats drinking
* Faster Laptop – This will replace the old Win2000 Laptop I was using with a pretty Kubuntu machine!
* Parkervision Extreme Range Router – Should be able to have WiFi just about anywhere in the vacinity of where I'm moving to.
* 5.1 Surround Speakers… my current 2.1 system is starting to age. I'll use it somewhere else.
* Wireless Print Server – Found it for $20 at the Salvation army, the plastic was still on it, and it's useful to have a dedicated IPP server too.
* All kinds of case Mods – I got a great deal on a black & red case with a window, so I want to make the image inside the window a good one. Lights, lit fans, colored round IDE cables, Illuminated keyboard and mouse pad… all the goodies. Might even switch that machine to another nice Red MSI Motherboard since it will look better.
* New Video card for the Linux Box. ATI drivers for Linux Suck, so I got a 32Mb NVidia card, that ought to help a bit with performance.
That's all for tonight… off to setup my PhpIcal and integrate it with Kontact…
I got alot accomplished today. To start with, I completed a number of websites at work…and learned some new techniques in Javascript to use CSS for fading content in to a website….no special plugins needed, and it works in Gecko, KHTML and Internet Explorer 5+ Take that Flash Junkies!
It also seems that I will have to finally take the time to learn MySQL with PHP… I've been putting it off for awhile because I can do most of what I need to with CSV and server-based files. Now I'm getting into the next level where I will need to build and query databases. I hope it's not as complex as the Oracle stuff I learned in college.
Finally… I also got my Linux machine working again! Kubuntu 5.10 w/KDE 3.5 Kernel 2.6.12-9 K7 on an AMD Athlon Xp 1.1GHz with 256Mb of RAM and a 60GB Hard Drive. Not quite as nice as it was before, but it's working… and I learned how to fix incorrect video drivers in X.org… sort of. I was looking for the old X Configurator, or even the XF96Config GUI… no dice. I couldn't remember the proper driver for the onboard video (the case I have now doesn't have room for the card). In the end, I cheated and use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg which did the trick nicely… I love debian based distros, they make life more pleasent.
I redesigned the website and upgraded my hosting plan. I didn't use WordPress on my own site since the MySQL Database is temporarily in use for another site I'm trying to pitch. I have a standard set of plugins for WordPress that I use, and if the customer has a gallery2 image gallery, it is integrated as well.
As for the portal, I decided that for now it will just be a list of sites I build and maintain from home. (My Jobe is building sites too, but I stay out of their area of specialization) I plan to do a search engine for these sites, but that is something I will take some more time to impliment since I want to do it right.
I'll get the bookmarks and software sections done soon… I've been finding lots of nice stuff, and plan on linking it from here.
